Ending Sydney’s shark fin trade
Sharks are some of the most beautiful and awe-inspiring creatures in the ocean, however many shark species are now critically endangered thanks to a range of human activities including culling programs, overfishing, plastic pollution and human-induced climate change. One of the biggest threats to shark survival is the global shark fin trade, which claims millions of shark lives every year. In Australian waters, shark finning is illegal, although our country remains an active participant in this cruel and secretive trade, with many local Sydney restaurants still selling shark fin soup.
Tess talked with Ashley Avci, Director of the not-for-profit shark conservation group “Fin Free Sydney”, which is calling on consumers to boycott flake and shark fin restaurants to bring an end to the local fin trade.
