Episode 2: Breaking Down the Fence

About the episode

Last episode we stood outside the school gates, peering in. But this episode we break down the fence and find out what it’s really like to come from a supposedly disadvantaged school.

Episode 2 of the All Things Equal podcast explores the perceptions and realities of low-SES schools, being the ‘First in Family’ to undertake Higher Education, the knowledge gap and the significance of family in educational performance.

We speak to outstanding students from ‘disadvantaged’ schools in Sydney’s west about where they came from and where they’re going. We also hear from Georgina Barratt-See from the University of Technology Sydney’s U:PASS program, helps a lot of low-SES students succeed at university.

We’ll take you to meet the people affected most, and those trying to turn things around. Season 2, ‘Uniform’ looks at the great equaliser — education. We discover what happens to kids who fall between the cracks and meet some remarkable people who’ve been there to catch them.
