Asbestos – now at a site near you
Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Bill Shorten has just said ” when there’s asbestos in the environment and when it becomes airborne and exposed to the environment that is a real problem. There’s no safe level of exposure.”
People in Kingsford, Randwick, South Coogee and Maroubra in homes bordering the Defence site, Randwick Barracks, are very concerned about the long history of contaminants on site. Reportedly up to 40,000 cubic metres of asbestos has been on the site, shipped in for Naval use or in buildings. Dept. of Defence spokespeople say whilst asbestos is in soil throughout the site, some asbestos has been left in situ as it is safe, some has been removed following industry standards.
Planned new buildings and proposed residential developments has recently stirred up the asbestos issue.
