INA RAY HUTTON
Ina Ray Hutton was the stage name for Odessa Cowan.
In 1934, she was approached by agents Irving Mills and Alex Hyde to lead an all-girl orchestra, the Melodears,
For the Melodears, Mills asked her to create a stage name.
The Melodears included trumpeter Frances Klein and Canadian pianist Ruth Lowe Sandler who wrote the first Billboard top 80 song I’ll Never Smile Again and Frank Sinatra’s radio theme, Put Your Dreams Away For Another Day.
The Melodears appeared in short films and in the movie Big Broadcast of 1936. They recorded six songs, sung by Hutton, before disbanding in 1939.
From 1940 – 49 she she lead the Ina Ray Hutton Orchestra (with men only) that included future band leader George Paxton.
The band appeared in the film Ever Since Venus (1944), recorded for Elite and Okeh, and broadcast, which you’ll hear today.
During the 1950s, Hutton formed a female big band that played on television and starred in The Ina Ray Hutton Show. She retired from music in 1968.
