BERT LOWN

Lown began as a sideman playing the violin in Fred Hamm’s band, and in the 1920s and 1930s he led a series of jazz-oriented dance bands, the most famous being the Biltmore Hotel Orchestra.

A hotel manager friend hired Lown to form the house band at New York’s prestigious Biltmore Hotel. The engagement lasted from 3 Dec 1929 to June 1932. The orchestra was 2tp-tb-2cl as-cl ts-v-bs vib-p-banj-g-b-dm-vo]: Frank Cush tp, Ed or Eddie Farley tp, Al Philburn tb, Lou Bode cl-as (or Fletcher Hereford cl-as), Paul Mason cl-ts, Sherry McGhee cl-as (or Mace Irish cl-as), Buddy Falco v, (or Mac Ceppos v), Chauncey Gray p, Tommy Felline g, Ward Lay b, Adrian Rollini bs and vib, Stan King dm, Smith Ballew vocals.

Bert Lown made a large number of records for Victor.

In 1926, Bert opened a theatrical booking agency, which in time led to his placing bands not only for clubs, but also for house parties and private functions.

In 1928, he became a bandleader in his own right while continuing booking hotel bands in Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay until 1941,

In 1930, with Hamm, Dave Bennett, and Chauncey Gray, he composed the standard “Bye Bye Blues.”

He also wrote,  “You’re The One I Care For” and “Tired.”

He left the music industry and moved on to executive positions in TV.
