The Problem of International Student Exploitation
The Fair Work Ombudsman has released an open letter to international students in an attempt to raise awareness about their workplace rights. This comes after recent cases of exploitation by employers, with many international student workers being underpaid by tens of thousands of dollars.
The exploitation of international students features prominently in cases taken to court, but the requests for assistance by international student workers only account for about 2% of total requests every year.
The Daily spoke with Mark Lee the Director of Media for the Office of the Fair Work Ombudsman to discuss the issue of exploitation of international students in the workplace and the Fair Work Ombudsman’s efforts to raise international student’s awareness of their workplace rights.
