Fairfax Media Budget Cuts – What This Means for Journalism
Fairfax Media announced on Wednesday, 3rd May, that it will cut 125 editorial staff in an attempt to save $30 million across its Australian newspaper operations.
The budget cuts have received major kickback, with journalists from the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age voting to strike for one week, including coverage of the Federal Budget on Tuesday. Fairfax publications will be stretched to produce quality journalism amid the cuts. In the era of fake news, how can independent and quality journalism be compromised?
To discuss the importance of investing in good journalism The Daily was joined by Dr Alex Wake, Senior Lecturer in Media and Communication at RMIT University.
