Fat Shaming; How to survive in a Society based on Appearance

According to the 2017/2018 National Health Survey and health Statistics, 67% of Australian adults were overweight or obese. Fat shaming has always been an issue within society especially as communities are structured to be brought up on values of looks and appearance; but the clear value of appearance within society came to light after talk show host  Bill Maher stated “fat shaming doesn’t need to end, it needs to make a comeback” and further continued by saying ‘if making fun of fat people made them lose weight, there will be no fat kids in schools.’ This statement sparked major controversy as many argued that his insensitive comments disregard the mental health of individuals and encourage bullying. To discuss this issue, Dr Deborah Mitchison joined us from Macquarie University to discuss fat shaming.
