Through the Smoke by Retiree

The Feature Album this week on 2SER is from Eora-based Retiree, who have returned with their second studio record Through the Smoke.

The follow up to their 2018 debut “House or home” on Rhythm Section International, the trio of Marco Vella, Tori Holleman & Matt Crowley have gone independent this time, and take a sophisticated approach to modern boogie and electronica.

Through the Smoke straddles boogie, AOR, and cosmic pop electronics, whilst exploring the narrative of passing “through the smoke” from a range of perspectives, both literal and conceptual. The title is drawn from poem by Holleman about a near-escape during the Black Summer bushfires. And this theme fits with the hazy aesthetic of the album generally. Dual vocals, warm basslines and crisp minimalist synth hooks carry this one all the way and it’s a highly accomplished sophomore record from the local three-piece.

Through the Smoke is out on vinyl and digital independently via Bandcamp
