FEATURE ALBUM

Good Morning Seven by Good Morning

The Feature Album this week on 2SER is Good Morning Seven, by Good Morning.

In comparison to their previous LP’s, such as 2021’s Barnyard, the Naarm-based duo of Stefan Blair and Liam Parsons  took a much longer amount of time to produce their seventh studio album:

“The last three Good Morning albums were made in a matter of days, so we wanted to stretch out and take a long time on this one”

This was partly due to covid and tour disruption, but also a desire to make an album with higher production values and consideration, as well as a conscious effort to listen to other music for inspiration.

Penned and produced across continents, the seventeen tracks featured here were from a whittling down of about 70 songs prior to recording. Some have origins as sketches from early in their ten year history, as well as a wealth of co-collaborators including Chloe Sanger (strings) Greer Clemens & Dannika Horvat (vocal hamonies) and Glenn Blair (Stefan’s dad) even gets involved on woodwind.

And it pays off in what is an expansive trip through tonally rich, bright and sonically experimental indie rock. Melted guitars, synth lines and shifting rhythms work around songwriting that covers everything from pandemic disruption, Nina Simone, dogs, Arnold Schwarzenegger soundboards and borrowed Liz Phair lines. Albums of this magnitude can occasionally get lost in their own hubris, however Good Morning Seven feels refreshingly playful and whimsical, yet also deep. It twists and turns through a whole range of musical territory and you’re always looking forward to the next stop on the way.

Good Morning Seven is out now via Polyvinyl on digital and 2LP
