FEATURE ALBUM
Oyster Rock! by The Brights
Words by Mitch Lumsden
The 2SER Feature Album of the Week is the debut album “Oyster Rock!” from Gadigal/Sydney band The Brights.
Connecting the sound of jangle/indie music and tropes of classic Australiana, “Oyster Rock!” hits in all the right spots. The twelve tracks across “Oyster Rock!” evoke the natural and uplifting, with the nylon string acoustic guitars and soft drums allowing for crisp and organic timbres to ring out.
Following up from their 2022 EP “The Wind And Other Things” the band constantly evolves their sound, from punk-oriented rhythms to softer melodically driven folk music whilst always maintaining their jangly acoustic sound. Washy guitars and hazy vocals from lead singer Sunny Blayney highlight tracks such as “You Know That I’m Wrong” as the band’s heavy reliance on stand-out vocal melodies hits perfectly.
“Everyone In Town” is a track whose hooks and guitar riffs show off the band’s more upbeat and energetic side, with scratchy rhythm guitar tones reminiscent of acts like The Frowning Clouds. This is followed by the aptly titled track, “Overcast Hangover”, which channels the essence of a lazy Sunday in bed with its gentle drum beat and strummed guitars hanging weightlessly over soothing backing vocals.
The Brights deliver a familiar yet unique sound with their debut LP “Oyster Rock!”, a record whose charm and DIY sound, brought to life with help from engineer and masterer Liam ‘Snowy’ Halliwell, makes for an incredible first album and leaving us eager for what’s to come.
You can listen to “Oyster Rock!” now on Spotify and Bandcamp.
