FEATURE ALBUM

Yirinda by Yirinda

The Feature Album this week on 2SER is the self-titled debut from Meanjin-based duo Yirinda.

Translating as “Now” in Butchulla language, Yirinda is the musical union of  songman Fred Leone and multi-instrumentalist Samuel Pankhurst.

It’s a genre-breaking fusion of avante-garde electronics interlaced with story, language and culture. In combining elements of freeform ambient, IDM, and experimental musicianship, both synthesised and acoustic, in tandem with the commanding performance of Leone, they’ve delivered one of the most compelling records of the year so far.

The album was recorded in Brisbane by Samuel himself, then mixed in London by Jake Miller (Björk, Arca, Yves Tumor) and mastered at Abbey Road by Alex Wharton (The Beatles, My Bloody Valentine). It’s a record that demands multiple deep listens and highly recommended.
