Finding New Colours

There is an almost infinite number of colours across the colour spectrum and researchers are always finding new colours, by chance or with the intention of solving a problem. Scientists today are now combining structures with different materials to create new colour effects – both visual and in the infrared.

One of these cool colours is vantablack – a combination of material and structure that absorbs 99.96% of light. Nic spoke to Colin Hall, research scientist in decorative and hard coatings from the University of South Australia who shared his knowledge on the relationship between structure and these new colours.
