Free to Be: Shaping a Safer Sydney
Research by Plan International Australia discovered one in three young women – who have been harassed more than once a month – report negative effects on their mental health. In an effort to address this concerning issue, a new digital mapping technology was launched in April, allowing women to identify the places around Sydney where they feel most uncomfortable and unsafe.
The Free to Be project was created by Plan International along with CrowdSpot and Monash University’s XYX Lab letting women anonymously provide details about a certain area including mentioning incidents they have experienced such as cat calling and being told to smile. The entries closed yesterday on Monday the 28th, however the data will be analysed by Monash’s XYX to provide a complete overview on the nature of sexual harassment in Sydney. Susanne Legena, CEO of Plan International, joined The Drive on the phone to discuss.
