Get Away with Dre: Winter School Holidays Ideas
This is where we talk about travel on a Tuesday to get you planning for some Winter Themed ideas, activities, or places you can get away to have fun these school winter holidays.
To get the blood pumping and get you warmed-up during winter, you can do an Amazing Race with the family – and no – you don’t need to jet set around the world with your family (it’s hard enough getting the kids in the car), you just need to get everyone to Darling Harbour.
In teams of 4 – 6 you will complete 10 tasks in total – all fun puzzles and creative challenges designed to get you exploring Darling Harbour, and build team spirit. It’s recommended for kids over 10, under 16s needs to be with a parent.
It’s a fun one for the family and it’s free!

This time of year is usually when people travel south to Thredbo or Perisher for a winter holiday, but you don’t need to travel that far to enjoy
Blue Mountains
This one is the closest to Sydney. You can search for snow at the National Park or in Katoomba, but you should check the weather before you go.
Further inland, it snows in Oberon. The Mayfield Garden is also now open for their Winter Festival. If you wait for it to snow, the Mayfield Garden is just beautiful to visit.
This is just 3 hours south. The Corin Forest has man-made snow right now! You can just book in for a snow play, go skiing or snowboarding there, take some lessons, and they also have a massive slide that takes you through the Mountain Ash Forest. In September they have dog play days so your pooch can enjoy the snow with other dogs. Booking is a must and you can add gear hire as well.
2 hours and 30 minutes up north, the Hunter Valley Gardens transforms into a snow field! It’s on now till July 23. There’s a snow play zone area, an icy toboggan slide area, and an ice skating rink.
- Ice skating at Bondi Beach
The Bondi Festival has set up an ice skating rink at Bondi Beach. Waverly residents get 10% off when booking at the onsite booking office. You will need to book a session time and the prices come with skate hire as well. Head down on a Friday and Sat night from 5:45pm a live DJ will be on site and on Sunday from 4 – 5pm you can catch a live performance.
