Health Star Rating to Get an Overhaul
The Federal Government has made a proposal that could see the already controversial health star rating system get a much-needed overhaul with a tougher focus on sugars and less of an emphasis on protein. This could help, for example, distinguish between healthy natural yoghurts and sugar-dense custards.
Katinka Day from consumer watchdog CHOICE Australia says that one of the organisation’s recommendations is that “natural sugars are incorporated into the algorithm” to help clarify whether a product is high in naturally occurring sugars or added sugars.
