Is the greatest perpetrator of child abuse the Australian justice system?

Following the reports on the Northern Territory’s treatment of minors in the justice system, Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath ordered a review into allegations of abuse in a Detention Centre in Townsville, Queensland.

Last week footage was leaked from 2013 of a 17-year-old being left in isolation in a spit mask in a Queensland prison. It is believed he was restrained for pressing an emergency button.

Amnesty International has released a report ‘Heads Held High’ outlining the issues with the juvenile justice system in Queensland and recommendations for the government on a local and national scale.

Many human rights concerns are being flagged by Queensland’s conditions of detention but also the over representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

Indigenous Rights Campaigner at Amnesty International, Roxanne Moore joined us to talk about the issue.
