Hair mats prevent water contamination
High-profile oil spillage cases such as the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon Gulf Coast spill are infamously hailed as oil pollution phenomena.
However, according to the sustainability organisation, Matter of Trust, an overlooked aspect of oil pollution may lie in daily activities such as illegal dumpage, leaking cars and buses, factory waste and motor oil entering storm drains and waterways.
Matter of Trust operates globally using human and animal hair donations to create hair mats that absorb oil and filter petroleum out of storm drains.
Hair could be a planet-friendly solution to mitigating oil waste contaminating reservoirs.
