What happened in New Zealand’s magnitude 7.5 earthquake

New Zealand’s recent earthquake on the south island has caused aftershocks all the way up to Wellington, the country’s capital on the north island. As a result, residents have been told to stay inside, alongside a confirmation of two deaths, roads have suffered extensive damage, and even a landslide occurred on the south island.

The magnitude of 7.5 is just 5 years after a 7.6 magnitude earthquake on Raoul Island, which was felt as far away as christchurch.

We were joined by Doctor Mark Quigley, Associate professor in tectonics and geomorphology at the university of Melbourne to shed light on the series of powerful earthquakes.
