Home Stretch Giving Foster Children a Chance at Independence

Imagine if you were kicked out of home on your 18th birthday? Do you think you’d be able to afford a place to rent and be able to set yourself up?

Most Australians now stay with Mum and Dad till their mid 20s, but kids in foster care don’t have that choice. They’re forced to leave care by their 18th birthday, and they’re not doing well. Around a third end up homeless within a year of leaving, and many others find themselves in jail. Victorian man Dylan Langley is a former foster child who ended up homeless soon after he left care, but now he’s fighting back as part of a campaign to extend support for kids to stay in care. He joined us this morning on The Daily.
