Honey Trap Sound System: DIY Subwoofers, Space and Deep Bass

What do you think of when you hear the phrase ‘sound system’? If you’re thinking a movement with roots in DIY electrical engineering and Jamaican street parties, you’re on the right track.

Honey Trap Sound System is Sydney’s very own female-built and led sound system, one of only three in Australia. Founder and Creative Director Maia Gold and DJ Sharmaine Spencer joined Veronika Aleshina in the studio for Drive’s International Women’s Day special broadcast. We hear about their working class roots, and the power music and good quality sound have to unify people in a cathartic experience space and deep bass. We also chat about their documentary film–funded by the European Research Council–currently on the international festival circuit, and the importance of investing in and documenting the achievements of womxn for history.
