Housing accessibility and the elderly
The home you live in now might be suitable for your current lifestyle, but what about when you grow older? It’s not uncommon to hear about elderly people having extended hospital stays because they simply cannot go home. Perhaps they can no longer climb their stairs, or maybe they can’t move about their bathrooms easily. While they wait at hospital, there might be expensive home modifications underway, or even plans to relocate. So are Australia’s housing standards failing our ageing population? To answer this question we were joined on The Daily by Margaret Ward, Research fellow at Griffith University and Convenor of the Australian Network for Universal Housing Design.
