How True Crime Podcasts Can Influence Court Cases

One of the most popular genres of podcasts is true crime. Chances are you’ve probably gotten hooked on one of these shows like Serial or The Teacher’s Pet.

These podcasts focus on cases where there has been an apparent miscarriage of justice or a wrongful conviction and a reporter sets out to uncover the truth.

Yet, what happens when these cases make it into a court room?

There are concerns about how an accused person can receive a fair trial if they’ve had an extensive and popular media investigation suggest that they are guilty. 

We spoke to Tyrone Kirchengast, a member of the Sydney Institute of Criminology and Associate Professor at the University of Sydney Law School.
