Increasing Floods and Natural Disasters
Many people in NSW have been impacted by the terrible floods that have swept away homes, animal livestock, families and livelihoods. Although much of the harsh rains have ceased, more than 20,000 people are still left stranded around the state with new evacuation warnings continuing especially in the Moree area. This natural disaster has even been classified by NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian as a “one-in-100-year event” which was also described as the most significant flood of NSW in the past 60 years. So with the extensive damage caused by these flood events across the state, it has forced us to ask the question; Are these natural disasters getting stronger every year? And what strategies can we utilise to stay safe? Professor Mark Howden joined us earlier from the Australian National University- Director for the Institute for Climate, Energy & Disaster Solutions.
