Indigenous Australians to be Protected by New eSafety Law
The new Safety Act 2021, has come into effect this year with the purpose of protecting Australians from serious online abuse. One of the parts of this legislation is that eSafety now have wider powers to remove abusive content that targets Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
The updated law includes cyberbullying and image abuse, though it does not cover areas such as defamation and satire.
Leila Gurruwiwi is an Australian media commentator and eSafety ambassador, and she believes that this change in legislation could be a game-changer for Indigenous communities.
