Indigenous Deaths in Custody

Before we begin this next segment, 2SER recognises the custodianship of the land on which our studio is situated – the Wattamattagal clan of the Darug Nation and pays respect to their Aboriginal Elders past, present and future.

Tragically, another Aboriginal woman has passed away in police custody. Cherdeen Wynne passed away in hospital on Tuesday, five days after she became unresponsive while handcuffed by police on a side street off Albany Highway. For the Indigenous community, Cherdeen Wynne’s passing has continued to signify the changes that still need to be implemented to better protect Aboriginal men and women in AustraliaWe were joined by Brett Collins, Justice Action Coordinator at the Community Justice Coalition, to discuss this prevailing and very tragic issue.
