Indigenous Housing: Stop Innovating, Start Building

A report from 2017 by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, found that the mortality and life expectancy gaps of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are actually widening due to accelerating non-Indigenous population gains in these areas. The Closing the Gap Report came and went with commentators and politicians alike once again noting a lack of progress. Housing underpins a large majority of the Closing the Gap targets, yet for many remote Aboriginal communities, purpose built housing is either inappropriately designed for the conditions or poorly built, often falling into disrepair within just a few years.
Kieran Wong, Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at Monash University and National President of the Association for Consulting Architects joined us on The Daily to talk about these issues.
