We discuss chapters 1-8 of Inspector Imanishi Investigates by Seicho Matsumoto. After a retired policeman is found with his face smashed in between the wheels of a train in the dark of a Tokyo morning, Inspector Imanishi Eitaro is put on the grim case, and finds absolutely nothing. The name of a small town in north-eastern Japan gets them nothing but stories of a weird vagabond and a run-in with some new-age celebrities. As the months pass, can Imanishi uncover the truth of the case and how it ties in to a pair of suspicious deaths in the local arts community? We also talk with Dr. L.J.M. Owen, author of The Great Divide, the Dr. Pimms Intermillenial Sleuth series, and Festival Director of Terror Australis Readers and Writers Festival.
