Is ‘Anti-viral’ Activewear More Harmful than Helpful?

Last week activewear label Lorna Jane, was fined $39,960 by The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) for selling clothes that claimed they could protect against COVID-19. The new and exclusive LG shield technology claimed to be ‘an important part of stopping the spread of both bacteria and viral infections and should be used in combination with other precautionary measures’. The company has since retracted mention of the anti-viral claims on their website.

So do we really need anti-viral and anti-bacterial fashion in our lives? and is this advertising more harmful than helpful as we fight COVID-19?  To help get us the bottom of this is, Senior Lecturer and Microbiology Researcher, Catherine Burke from the University of Technology Sydney joined Drive.
