Is Australia’s India Travel Ban Legal?
The federal government’s decision to ban Australians in India from coming home, raised much controversy. The decision came into effect as India faces a serious second wave COVID crisis, with over 400,000 new cases just yesterday. The Biosecurity Act declared a $66,000 fine or five years imprisonment if the travel ban was breached, with flights suspended until May 15. The Australian Human Rights Commission criticised the ban as “raising serious human rights concerns”, as 9,000 Australians are left stranded in limbo with shortages in oxygen and vaccines. The raising question is, whether Australia’s India travel ban is legal?
