Is the Government Failing Single Mothers?
The Australian Child Support system has long been criticised for its ineffectiveness with a total $1.64 billion of child support debt being owed throughout the country. With many parents reporting a lower income than they actually make in order to pay less child support, this leaves many single parents, particularly single mums who make up 80% of child support recipients, in a vulnerable state without the proper means to be able to care for their children. To discuss further we spoke to Terese Edwards, Coordinator of the National Council of Single Mothers And Their Children, who was involved in the Swinburne University report that has recently brought much of this information to light.
