Japan’s larger than expected New Year’s Day Earthquake

On New Year’s Day, a larger than anticipated 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit Japan’s Noto Peninsula. It caused a death toll of a reported 126 people with hundreds reported missing, as well as collapsed buildings, power outages to thousands of homes, and fires. Moreover, rescue efforts have been made worse by recent bad weather and snow.

To talk with James Murray about the situation of the earthquake in Japan is emeritus professor Hiroshi Sato from The University of Tokyo’s Earthquake Research Institute.
