Jodie Kell on Ripple Effect Band’s debut album ‘Mayawa’

The hugely exciting Ripple Effect Band are gearing up to release their debut album ‘Mayawa‘ on Friday 13th September, packed with insatiable reggae rock and songs sung in multiple Aboriginal languages.

Hailing from Maningrida in the Northern Territory, Ripple Effect Band is an all-women’s band, consisting of Tara Rostron, Rachel Thomas, Rona Lawrence, Jolene Lawrence, Jodie Kell and Patricia Gibson. ‘Mayawa’  is named after the Na-Kara word for beach, coastline and sand, and honors the traditions of Western Arnhem Land.

Their latest single “Na-Kalamandjarda”  has been released ahead of the album launch and the band is on tour now in the Northern Territory. Jodie Kell, multi-instrumentalist and manager of the band spoke to 2SER’s Jack Gembitsky about the process of making ‘Mayawa’, touring and how Ripple Effect Band got started.
