Just to win the hearts and minds of many nations’ generations?

 

That’s a rewritten version of the first four bars of the ‘revolutionary’ (pun intended) musical Hamilton, which won 11 out of 16 Tony Awards, 7 out of 13 Oliviers, the Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album, the Pulitzer for Drama, and even the Kennedy Center honour. It’s about Alexander Hamilton, the first Treasury Secretary of the United States. It quite literally “turned the world upside down”. Last Wednesday, creator Lin-Manuel Miranda announced that Hamilton is debuting down under at the Sydney Lyric in 2021. It will be nice to have Hamilton on our side! What makes Hamilton the hottest ticket in theatre, worth being in “the room where it happens”? Trevor Jones, Lecturer in Musical Theatre at Queensland Conservatorium in Griffith University, had a conversation with Ruby on Drive to discuss.
