Leading AI experts standing against ‘killer robots’
It’s like a scene out of The Terminator; a robot created with the intent of killing other humans. But that was 1984 (coincidence? I think not), and now it’s becoming a reality.
Over a hundred leading artificial intelligence experts signed a petition presented to the United Nations earlier this week, calling for a ban on lethal autonomous weapons. They believe that terrorist organisations could be in early stages of developing these ‘killer robots’, which would have devastating effects.
Professor of AI at UNSW Toby Walsh released this letter at the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence convention, which is currently being held in Melbourne. He spoke to Tess about the community’s warnings against this technology, and shared some of his favourite highlights from the convention.
