The Biennial Return of lo-fi society

The AHEGS-accredited UNSW lo-fi society, or lofisoc for short, is the only university club of its kind in Australia. Their Discord server was birthed in the middle of the extended lockdown period as a place for community to simulate parallel-working, studying, or gaming together in the age of social distancing.

Tag-lined as “friends to study/chill/create with” in a nod to the online phenomenon of “lo-fi hip-hop beats to relax/study to”, they’re in their fifth year running of their annual mixtape passion project which launches on Thursday 17 October at the Robert Webster Building on UNSW’s Kensington campus. Joshua, the spearheading music director of the society, was on-air with Jono to chat more about the enduring appeal of the lo-fi aesthetic in the university zeitgeist.
