Hailing from Athens, Greece is 25 year old producer Moderator. Not much else is known about this elusive beat-maker but on their new album Sinner’s Syndrome, you’ll find an incredibly diverse set of tracks with an enviable fluidity. Seamlessly transitioning from lounge, hip-hop, soul, dub, Spaghetti Western soundtracks and more, there’s some outstanding production here and a captivating, uptempo trip-hop album, if any.
The last we heard from Laura Veirs, she was collaborating with Neko Case and k.d. lang on their bewitching 2016 record case/lang/veirs. It’s been a long gap between her solo work but she’s returned to that with 10th album The Lookout. Lush and reverb-laden folk pop, these songs are deceptively simple but dig underneath and there lies a lurking tension. By Veirs own admission, the album is a soundtrack to troubling post-election times, but finding comfort and “looking outwards”. Cue some very intricate light and shade details with billowing harmonies, floating slide guitars and delicate fingerpicking. Also features guest vocals from Sufjan Stevens and Jim James, and contributions from Karl Blau, Steve Moore and Eli Moore.
Swiss group Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp grew out of sporadic jam sessions in Geneva’s experimental venue Cave12. Over the years, they’ve evolved into a full blown band with their name roughly translating to Almighty Orchestra Marcel Duchamp, paying homage to West-African bands and the French Dadaist. On their new album Sauvages Formes, find the group taking influence from countless styles, from classical to afro jazz to avant-pop. Analogue synthesisers, strings and electric guitars move around geometric soundscapes fuelled by heavenly gospel harmonies and retro drum machines. An energetic and fun record!
Also, new singles from Jim James, Frøkedal, Cherry Glazerr, Wooden Shjips, Sola Rosa, Speedy Ortiz and LUMP, the new project from Laura Marling and Mike Lindsay.
