“Making Art For Art’s Sake” with Jen Cloher
“You are in danger of living a life so comfortable and soft that you will die without ever realising your true potential” – David Goggins
Jen Cloher (Ngāpuhi & Ngāti Kahu) is a songwriter and performer living on unceded Wurundjeri land in Naarm Melbourne. Over the past 20 years, they have become a master of their craft.
Their latest surprise single, ‘Annabelle’ is a track that didn’t quite make it into their acclaimed 2023 album ‘I Am The River, The River Is Me.’ ‘Annabelle’ is a gentle and emotional track that combines wisdom, introspection and Cloher’s masterful musicality to create a piece of work that takes on several meanings. But the most striking element is the decentering of white feminism in modern discourse. They explain that white feminism has had an impact, but often seeks individual power, rather than the total liberation of communities from oppressive structures. It is a powerful and moving track, that is accompanied by a beautiful music video – which also happens to be Cloher’s directorial debut.
Jen Cloher joined Jas from Dream State earlier this week, to chat all about their upcoming tour, making their directorial debut and ‘making art for art’s sake.’
