Making Price Gouging Illegal
During the coronavirus pandemic, many Australians have headed to their supermarket, pharmacy, or searched online to get their essential items. To the surprise of many of us, the humble roll of toilet paper became a prized possession. Now the auctions for the dunny roll for hundreds of dollars may have had us giggling a little, there were still plenty of examples of prices going through the roof, that made us ponder “Can they do that?”.
Well, technically the price increase is not illegal, but the consumer advocacy group CHOICE believes it should be. CHOICE has started a petition to call on state and federal governments to make price gouging illegal to ensure fair prices on essentials for everyone.
