Marine Sanctuaries Debate: What The Science Says
Marine Protected Areas are sanctuaries where activities like recreational fishing are restricted. Their goal is to restore balance to marine ecosystems by providing undisturbed habitat for fish to grow and breed. In 2018 plans for a Sydney marine park were scrapped after huge opposition – and now, we’re seeing marine sanctuary rollbacks on the New South Wales South Coast. The effects have been studied and the science is in, so why are marine sanctuaries still such a hotly contested issue? Professor Hugh Possingham, chief scientist at the nature conservancy joined The Thursday Daily to help us wade through these murky waters.
