Tiana Khasi – Meghalaya
We don’t highlight too many EPs in this review, but the debut one from Brisbane based singer-songwriter Tiana Khasi is just too special to ignore. ‘Meghalaya’ takes its name after the North Eastern Indian state where the Khasi tribe hail from which is one of the only matriarchal societies that remain in the world, and also the tribe of Tiana’s great grandmother. Taking inspiration from this, Tiana writes about self-empowerment, her family and heritage on her debut, that’s plush with exciting elements of jazz, future-soul, and hip-hop.
Nashville’s Lambchop also return with their self decided fourteenth album (skipping album 13), ‘This (is What I Wanted To Tell You)’. Each release across the group’s 30 odd year existence is incredibly distinct, and extending on their most recent jump from alt-country to electronic soul, we hear similarly, fluid textures their latest. Fronted by the inimitable Kurt Wagner, warbly, multi-effected vocals, come together with sinewy, analogue synths for yet another record that’s full of swoon and refuses to be boxed up.
And Tuareg singer Mdou Moctar more than delivers on his uplifting fifth album ‘Ilana (The Creator)’. Rich with Saharan desert blues, psychedelic rock, and groove influences, Mdou Moctar makes the type of music that’s just ready to be performed in stadiums. Brilliant as ever guitar work, with an engrossing polyrhythm drive throughout.
And new singles from Obongjayar, Lucy Roleff, Doug Tuttle, Body Type, and Vacations.
