Mexico has a New Leftist President After Historic Elections
The Mexican people have elected a new leftist President, ending nearly 20 years of two-party rule and generating new hope in a country strangled by corruption and violence.
64 year old Andrés Manuel López Obrador – or “Amlo” as he’s affectionately known – was elected in a landslide victory with at least 53% of the vote.
On the same night, Amlo’s Morena Party also won numerous mayoral contests. Most significantly, Mexico City has its first female mayor with the election of environmental engineer and respected academic Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
President-elect López Obrador has vowed to crack down on corruption, rein in Mexico’s war on drugs and invest in social policy to reduce poverty, crime and violence. But how will this new alternative leader fair when it comes to breaking down systemic corruption in Mexico?
Associate Professor in Latin American Studies Jeffrey Browitt from UTS International Studies joined Tess to talk Mexican politics and the road ahead for the new Mexican Government.
