More Civil Societies: Child care

The Child Care Subsidy – replacing the Child Care Benefit and Child Care Rebate – will come into effect on July 2, and will likely put more pressures on families as child care providers are predicted to hike up their prices.

On this week’s More Civil Societies, Eva Cox talks about how child care services originally began as community-based organisations that employed qualified professionals and teachers. The push of child care services into the marketplace meant that the market was soon dominated by commercial providers which created many issues – the demand for child care services have sent prices skyrocketing, centres often run at capacity, some centres have waiting lists, and, as a result, access has become a very real issue.
