With a federal and state election just around the corner, policy debates have started. However, a lack of good social policies have left us with a distrust in democratic processes, says Eva Cox, and politicians are increasingly treating the Australian public as customers that can be bought rather than citizens with rights and responsibilities.

Now is a better time than any for a politician or party to genuinely care about the needs of their constituents, and work towards creating a more civil society.
