New ABC program looks into why the phrase ‘Man Up’ is so toxic

“Man Up”, if you’re an Australian male it’s something you’ve no doubt heard at least once and probably many times in your life. Man up, toughen up, don’t be such a girl when it comes to showing a bit of emotion or what can be perceived as weakness. It’s a toxic attitude, and it’s killing Australian men, with suicide the leading cause of death for men aged 15-44 years. Gus Worland, Captain of Triple M’s Grill Team, has teamed up with the ABC for a three-part documentary series exploring how we can change this attitude and start saving lives, it’s called Man Up, episode one aired last night and one of the participants in the series, master facilitator Tom Harkin joined The Daily to discuss contemporary masculinity in Australia.
