The federal government has proposed the introduction of new online privacy codes parliament to place more regulations on social media companies to protect their users in Australia.

The draft bill will require those under 16 years old to attain parental permission to create an account on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok.

The bill aims to strengthen the privacy of children who use social media. Experts say although the legislation is well intended- it would be difficult to introduce and enforce.

The Wire’s Sean Britten spoke with Cyberpsychologist and Digital Health Researcher at the University of Sydney, Dr. Brad Ridout about the proposed changes.
