It was in 1970 that music industry outsider Jerry Williams Jr. reinvented himself as Swamp Dogg, and since then he’s been making understated, weirdo soul and blues for a small but loyal audience. While 2018’s ‘Love, Loss, and Auto-Tune’ record saw the maverick enter the mainstream and landing critical and chart success, Swamp Dogg now returns to his first love of country music, the genre in which he made his start in as a ghostwriter in the 60s. On ‘Sorry You Couldn’t Make It’, there are still Southern soul and blues that seep through, but lyrically it’s a heartfelt country record ornate with slide guitars, rollicking bass lines and wailing organs. John Prine also features here on two duets, with contributions from Jenny Lewis, and Justin Vernon.
If you had to come up with a playlist fit for an ice skating routine, the gliding tunes of U.S. Girls should be considered. Meg Remy is back with her 7th album ‘Heavy Light’ under this moniker and mixes originals with re-interpretations of older songs in her catalogue to create an ecstatic and theatrical album equally inspired by New York disco and and Phil Spector girl groups. Recorded live in Toronto with a band of 20 musicians, including saxophonist Jake Clemons of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band.
