There is so much new music to dig into this week on 2ser, beginning with the feature album of the week “Australian Dream” by Concrete Sea. Recorded at Stranded Recording Studios near Wollongong, the debut album from Concrete Sea features the distinct husky vocal tone of frontman Nicholas Elias as he sings heart-wrenching tales of the darkness in modern Australian life and experiences with love, generation relations and personal revelation. Accompanied by infectious guitar pop hooks and a consistent direct and authentic energy from the band, this album is a must-listen for fans of Robert Forster and Bones and Jones.
Following this we have the debut EP “Raw Liquid Power” from Glasgow punk outfit Water Machine released via London-based label Upset the Rhythm. This four-track EP is a quickfire arrangement of high-energy chorus guitars and frantic drums, accompanied by the shouty vocals of band member Hando Morice creating a fun and exciting blend of sounds from artists like Snooper and The Buoys.
Naarm-based singer-songwriter Rin McArdle has released her debut self-titled LP “Rin McArdle”. The album showcases McArdle’s rich voice and incredible songwriting as the project fluctuates between emotions of anger and hardship as McArdle confronts past experiences of growing up in Adelaide growing up as a young, queer person and battling addiction. The record was self-recorded and produced by McArdle and this personal touch shines through in this immensely intimate and beautiful album.
Electronic music pioneer, Aphex Twin, has blessed us with his new EP “Blackbox Life Recorder 21f / in a room7 F760”. Irish-British producer Richard David James showcases his eclectic taste in experimental sounds on this record, which is littered with complex drum machine arrangements, warping and melancholic synthesizer melodies and spacious, ambient pads. The release sees more of a club-oriented approach to the record seen in previous releases such as the renowned “Selected Ambient Works 85-92”, incorporating unique grooves and bass tones to produce another brilliant release from Aphex Twin.
Looking overseas again, Toronto-based DJ and producer Bambii released her debut EP “Infinity Club”. Including features from the likes of Aluna, Lady Lykez and Sydanie, “Infinity Club” brings together club sounds of jungle and electronica along with more soulful r&b vibes on tracks like “Hooked”.
There were a number of incredible new local singles released as well from the likes of Carla Geneve with her new single “Bills”, Moussa Diakite who released the Wassoulou-styled single “Djougou” and Exhibitionist with a catchy and uplifting new single “Sparks”. Naarm-based disco group The Bamboos also released their new single “Ex-Files” in anticipation of their forthcoming album in November.
