The 2SER feature album of the week comes from Chicago born rapper Noname with her third studio album, ‘Sundial’. Since her last LP ‘Room 25’ released in 2018, fans of Fatimah Nyeema Warner (Noname) have been eagerly anticipating this new release which delivers in its slick yet bluntly conscious hip hop and neo-soul vibe, engrossed in clinical and loopy beats. Fatimah places significant weight in her lyricism on issues of social just and cold outrage as she takes aim at the hypocrisy of celebrity culture, the US political establishment and the carnage of imperialism. The project features collaborations with artist like Common and Billy Woods, yet it is Noname’s powerful lyricism and flow which remains the focal point of this great new LP.
The second album, ‘Struggler’, from Canberra-based Ghanaian-Australian artist Genesis Owusu has arrived and is a stunning release following up from his critically acclaimed debut LP ‘Smiling With No Teeth’. Genesis Owusu masterfully blends influences from soul, punk, afrobeat and electronica across the eleven tracks featured. This is matched with Owusu’s iconic poetic vocal style that uncovers themes of resilience, hope, doubt and spirituality as he details the tale of the struggler, running through an absurd world with no ‘where’ or ‘why’ at hand.
Following this we have another Australian release, with the debut album ‘Waving To My Girl’ from Naarm/Melbourne solo artist Winten. The sparkling, guitar-led instrumentation shines across the LP as a by product of Winten’s bedroom production recorded across a two year span. This is a brilliant release for fans of artists like Julia Jacklin and Workhorse.
Looking overseas again, we have the new EP ‘phantasea pharm’ from New York four-piece CG8 (aka Cumgirl8), released on 4AD Records. Featuring members Lida Fox, Veronika Vilim, Chase Lombardo and Avishag Rodrigues, ‘phantasea pharm’ is an unhinged disco-punk record that oscillates between the theatrical, sublime and the weird. The unpredictable electronic blurts and crunchy distorted guitars create a fantastical and whimsical feeling across the record which is pure fun from start to finish.
Eje Eje have released their debut studio album ‘Five Seasons’ which includes twelve tracks (including a final bonus track) which takes on the theme of the five seasons of Chinese calendar. Itamar Kluger works in a plethora of global influences into this project, with the ever-evolving jazz-funk grooves work in tandem with the traditional “Khaliji” music heard from the Gulf, the grooves of Afrobeat as well as Jamaican roots and dub oon tracks like “Tipsy Cruise (Autumn)”.
There are also a number of great local releases coming out of Eora/Sydney this week, coming from prolific local minimalist-pop duo Beryl with their new track ‘All Things’ as well as Fig with their recent collaboration with Caitlin Harnett in anticipation of their upcoming album with their new single ‘Hot Sea’.
