Naarm/Melbourne five-piece Screensaver have delivered their second studio album, “Decent Shapes”, a scintillating synth punk/new-wave record for this week’s Feature Album of the Week.  “Decent Shapes” brings a rising energy of rage and tension all the way throughout from the urgent vocals from lead singer Krystal Maynard and intense psych-laced guitar riffs. Maynard’s lyricism explores the dystopian nature and materialism of our current world and her unique and catchy delivery draws you in alongside the lush synthesizer layers that make this album such an amazing listen.

Marrickville-based DIY four-piece Mope City release their fourth and latest album “Population 4” via Tenth Court Records. Fans of Galerie 500 and Low will be in love with this new release, with its dark and brooding “downer-rock” instrumentation and vocals which is occasionally offset with some truly incredible guitar hooks and raw grinding energy. Tracks like “Wind Locked Me Out” showcase this shift between the angst of the dark math-rock guitar riffs and glimpses of upbeat acoustic guitars and drums.

Caitlin Harnett and the Pony Boys have nailed their fabulous alternative country sound again on their second studio album, “All Night Long”. Following up from their 2020 album “Late Night Essentials”, the Eora-based band draw on their innovative inner-city and alternative roots with the cosmic guitars laid all across the tracks. The occasional burst of horns on tracks like “Can’t Have it All” is the cherry on top of Harnett’s classic songwriting, as she explores relationship breakdowns whilst searching for self-worth and independence.

Keeping it local,  “Plot, Thus” is the debut album from F’Tang.  Made up of a rotating cast drawn from groups such as Loose Fit, Ted Danson With Wolves & Ghost Of Television, it’s a beautifully realised and hypnotic record of pastel-coloured soundscapes that channels midwest emo and math-rock into lush, melodic and delicately layered instrumentals. Cryptic,  nonchalant track titles (such as “Two Sheds” and “A Medical Joke you will learn”) bely what is a finely crafted first record which is available via esteemed Sydney label and shop Black Wire Records.

Gotts Street Park hit home with their debut studio record “On the Inside”, a gorgeous album from the Leeds-based beatmaker collective pulling RnB influences from 60s Motown and 70s deep soul. The cinematic and hazy analogue sounds of core members Josh Crocker, Tom Henry and Joe Harris lay the groundwork for their rotating lineup of vocal collaborators who beautifully contribute to this soulful and groovy record. Definitely an essential listen if you’ve been loving the new Say She She and Yussef Dayes releases.

Looking back to Victoria now, we have the debut album “From Here To You” from soul collective Squid Nebula who deliver radiant cosmic soul and disco jams with the flawless performance of Noongar vocalist Bumpy. The group have been performing live in the Melbourne soul scene for over a decade, emerging in a variety of different guises, collaborating with members from acts such as Quality Used and Bohjass. This is a magnificent first record from an amazing group, which will leave you wanting more.
